Why I'm Not Here for Pete Buttigieg's Moderate Politics in the 2020 Primaries

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Pete Buttigieg’s 2020 presidential campaign is historic. The mayor of South Bend, Indiana, is the first openly gay candidate to gain serious national traction on a run for the presidency. At the center of considering his campaign, in my view, is a tension between an unprecedented high-water mark for LGBTQ representation in national politics and an age-old question of whether or not a candidate whose policy positions aren’t exactly groundbreaking should be at the vanguard of LGBTQ representation in that space.

I think it’s important to acknowledge that already, Buttigieg’s campaign has provided previously unthinkable moments by giving discussions about sexuality new space in the national discourse. He has broken new ground by being a primary contender who’s opened up about the struggles of coming out as gay, perhaps most notably to Rachel Maddow, an openly gay MSNBC anchor.

“There were certainly plenty of indications by the time I was 15 or so that I could point back and be like, ‘Yeah, yeah, this kid’s gay,’ but I guess I just needed to not be,” Buttigieg told Maddow on April 15, offering an unprecedented moment: a presidential candidate on a major cable broadcast talking about the pain of coming out. Buttigieg continued: “There’s this war that breaks out, I think, inside a lot of people when they realize they might be something that they’re afraid of, and it took me a very long time to resolve that.”

Buttigieg’s story of coming to terms with his sexuality and his relationship with his husband, Chasten Buttigieg (now a celebrity in his own right) are featured in a campaign video he released last month, days after he officially announced his presidential run was moving from an exploratory committee to an official campaign. In this video, it’s obvious that Buttigieg’s campaign promises a great deal of potential in large part due to the fact that, even 10 years ago, it would’ve been unimaginable.

In fact, 11 years ago—as the 2008 campaign was entering its final days—then-candidate and future president Barack Obama even said he wasn’t in favor of gay marriage, keeping him in line with the Democratic Party’s views at the time. Obama would go on to change his view during his 2012 re-election campaign, making him the first president to take that position. The Democratic Party would follow suit later that year, and the Supreme Court would end up legalizing same-sex marriages in 2015, during Obama’s second term.

In the context of this recent and radical shift on the Democratic Party’s stances on LGBTQ issues, having a married gay man now running for president is truly a sign of how much has changed in a relatively short amount of time. But when it comes to Mayor Pete, as he’s come to be known by those perhaps uncertain of how to pronounce his last name (BOOT-edge-edge, BOOT-a-jedge, or BOO-tuh-judge, according to Chasten), the question of the value of a historic first must be weighed alongside the policy ideas a relatively moderate candidate is running on.

An openly gay man getting this kind of attention running for president is remarkable, but Buttigieg’s focus on political narratives—as opposed policy ideas—is the political playbook that Democrats have run on for years. And while Obama’s hope-and-change campaign had great success in 2008, mainstream attitudes toward LGBTQ rights aren’t the only things that have shifted on the left since then—there’s also, I believe, a growing sense among even centrist liberal voters that style without substance isn’t the answer to the questions of our nation’s future.

PAY-DAY WISHLIST | SEPTEMBER

& O T H E R S T O R I E S

Ah, &Otherstories. Since it came onto the scene a few years ago it's been one of my absolute favourite stores for key pieces. It looks like early this autumn it's going to be a one-stop shop for 70's inspired neutral toned items and capsule wardrobe accessories.

I've had my eye on these Gucci-esque loafers for over a year now and I might finally take the plunge. Also, every year I eye up jumpers like this one on the right, I think it's time to purchase that ONE timeless & cosy knit. When you do it, you want to make sure it's good quality and I always feel safe with &Otherstores when it comes to that.

Greta Van Fleet Released the Most Polarizing Debut Album of 2018

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Back in 1969, Rolling Stone famously trashed Led Zeppelin in the magazine's review of the British rock band's debut album. "In their willingness to waste their considerable talent on unworthy material the Zeppelin has produced an album which is sadly reminiscent of Truth. Like the Beck group they are also perfectly willing to make themselves a two- (or, more accurately, one-a-half) man show," John Medelsohn wrote. "It would seem that, if they’re to help fill the void created by the demise of Cream, they will have to find a producer (and editor) and some material worthy of their collective attention."

Advertisement - Continue Reading Below

Medelsohn wasn't completely wrong, of course. Led Zeppelin did lift a lot of its sound from its predecessors and contemporaries, as musicians have always done. But Zeppelin would go on to become one of the most influential rock bands in the last century, one that Rolling Stone itself would later idolize.

Musicians have spent the last half decade pulling from Led Zeppelin, but this week the Internet is mad about one band in particular: Greta Van Fleet, which if you haven't heard yet, sounds exactly like Led Zeppelin. Even Robert Plant noticed it.

After an EP last year, Greta Van Fleet has been enjoying some stunning success, having wracked up millions of streams, late-night appearances, spots on the world's biggest festivals, and sold out shows around the globe.

Much like Rolling Stone did with Led Zeppelin's debut, Pitchfork—our modern equivalent of a tastemaker music publication—absolutely trashed Greta Van Fleet in a review published today, which gave their debut album Anthem of the Peaceful Army a 1.6 out of 10 (a score even lower than Ed Sheeran's ÷).

Advertisement - Continue Reading Below

"Greta Van Fleet sound like they did weed exactly once, called the cops, and tried to record a Led Zeppelin album before they arrested themselves. The poor kids from Frankenmuth, Michigan don’t even realize they’re more of an algorithmic fever dream than an actual rock band," writes senior editor Jeremy D. Larson in the best opening paragraph of a music review all year.

And, again, he's not wrong.

What's interesting, though, is the polarized response to the album on the internet. GVF fans have been quick to jump to the band's defense, accusing Pitchfork of trashing something just to be cool.

Meanwhile, Rolling Stone actually liked the album, which makes sense given that this was an album essentially made for Rolling Stone's core demographic.

But why has this album in particular become so polarizing, at a time when there's much worse and much more interesting music being made?

Much of this has to do with the major label push behind Greta Van Fleet. Republic Records is actively trying to turn this band into the next rock music tentpole, as Larson notes in his review. And it's also the state of guitar music in general, which has been waiting for another Black Keys or Kings of Leon to come along to revive interest in a rapidly aging sound. There are certainly much worse bands that have emerged in the 2010s than Greta Van Fleet (The Chainsmokers, to name one) more deserving of our hatred.

Yes, Greta Van Fleet's music is bad and their entire aesthetic feels disingenuous because of the major label support, but it is harmless. They're kids—19 to 22 years old—who just still haven't grown out of that phase of idolizing Led Zeppelin. And who among us hasn't been in a band that's ripped off Led Zeppelin? I certainly have.

Guy, 69, Wants To Be 20 Years Younger So He Can Score On Tinder

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Dutch "positivity guru" and DJ Emile Ratelband isn't too happy with his age. His birth certificate says he's 69-years-old, but he believes he's only 49. At least that's what he's saying to convince the courts.

Ratelband has filed to legally change his age to 49 because he wants to score more dates on Tinder, Mashable reports.

"When I'm 49 with [this face], then I'm rammed," he told CNN.

I don't know about that, but according to a recent study that says men are most attractive at 50 and Idris Elba being named 'the world's sexiest man' at 49, that age doesn't seem far off.

A Publicity Stunt?

While this story has gone super viral, it smells fishy to me.

Besides wanting to score on Tinder, the guy has constantly stated this motive: "We live in a time when you can change your name and change your gender. Why can't I decide my own age?" he said, according to BBC News.

It sounds to me like he has a bone to pick with transgender people legally changing their gender and he just concocted this stunt, but hey, I'm just speculating here.

Why Not Just Change His Age?

If we're going along with what this guy says, then it begs the question: Why not just lie on Tinder?

“I don’t want to lie,” he told the Washington Post. “I want to be myself, so don’t force me to lie.”

At least he's got that right.

Guys, don't lie. Post your real age and reveal the truth about yourself in your bio — there are ALWAYS positive things you can say no matter who you are. If you lie, the person will figure it out, guaranteed. Honesty really is the best policy.

Ladies, that also goes for you, too. I'll never understand those profiles that are listed as, say, 25, and then in the bio it says something like 'I'm really 20.' Why not just put it as 20 then!?

Transitional Dressing & Always Feeling Too Hot Or Too Cold

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

We all did it. We all had a little moan about it being too hot, too sweaty and too humid for our unaccustomed British bodies to deal with; usually the summer season brings with it a sprinkling of warm days and a lot of rain (because what would a bank holiday or festival be without a shower or two?) but 2018 will go down as the year that all changed for the better. So many gloriously warm days and weekends filled with sunshine, but that amazing start to our season made the fall into chillier days all the more difficult to swallow. Now it already feels like the middle of Autumn and jumpers are coming out of hibernation, albeit a tad prematurely, while our feet are cosily tucked into a warm pair of boots. Admittedly though, these few months of the year always fill me with dread – as I always seem to get it wrong no matter what I wear.

Feel optimistic and reach for a summery dress and sandals? Spend the day freezing my backside off and wondering where I last put my umbrella. Look out the window and feel like it’s probably time you took a jacket? I guarantee the sun will come out to play an hour after you’ve left the house, leaving you sweating from either stubbornly wearing said jacket or lugging it around in your bag. I seem to spend the same few months a year feeling incredibly awkward and inappropriately dressed as I cling on to my summer wardrobe as long as possible before getting the winter garms out of storage; this year though, I think I’ve nailed the perfect transitional look I’ll be wearing as many times as I can get away with.

Floaty dresses with sleeves offer the best of both worlds: light and airy enough to keep you cool when the sun comes out, but covered up enough to keep your bits warm without rushing off to find a cardi. Pair this effortless item with a basket bag to keep it feeling light, or swap for a tote big enough for a light jacket and brolly when the leaves start to turn. All you need is a slip or a pair of tights for added warmth, while a biker jacket adds an extra layer of protection when the temperature really starts to drop. I’ve so much love for this leopard print number (it helps it’s totally the print of the season!) that I know I’ll be wearing it all the way to next Spring, with just a little layering to keep it seasonally appropriate.

So here’s no longer feeling too hot or too cold – in the words of Goldilocks, this makes it all ‘just right’.

Christmas Movies on Netflix You Can Stream During the Holidays

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

The winter weather outside might be frightful, but cozying up inside with our fave Christmas movies on Netflix and some snacks is always delightful. The arrival of the most wonderful time of the year has filled our queues with some of the best films for the yuletide. Once you have finished your first (or third) viewing of The Holiday Calendar, you'll want to add these Christmas movies to your binge-watching list.

From the colorful and comedic adventures of How the Grinch Stole Christmas to the fantastical fairytale of The Nutcracker, Netflix has your holiday vacation plans covered. After you’ve wrapped all your presents and settled down for a long post-holiday shopping nap, you can continue feeling merry and bright with these 11 Christmas movies on Netflix.

Love, Actually

Would it even be the holiday season without a viewing of Love, Actually? This endearing romantic comedy — which includes an all-star cast of actors including Hugh Grant, Keira Knightley, Colin Firth, and Liam Neeson — is beloved by fans for its story of multiple romantic relationships contending with the hustle and bustle of the holidays.

The Christmas Chronicles

Two siblings — portrayed by actors Darby Camp and Judah Lewis — attempt to follow through on a plan to capture Santa on camera. Everything seems to be in order for their special mission, but then the jolly man in red (Kurt Russel) himself delivers an unexpected surprise.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Allow your heart to grow three sizes and enjoy a live-action version of Dr. Seuss's classic Christmas tale. The film, which has Jim Carey decked out in green as the Grinch himself and Gossip Girl's Taylor Momsen, brings the land of Whoville to life, complete with an appearance from Max the dog.

A Christmas Prince

In what's truly a gift for fans of movies that are cheesy and sweet, Netflix unveiled A Christmas Princean unintentionally hilarious tale that stole the hearts of social media. Taking its thematic cues from some IRL royalty, the movie, starring Rose McIver of IZombie, is the closest we'll ever get to actual royalty. And don’t worry, once you finish the first film, you can immediately start the sequel. A Christmas Prince: A Royal Wedding debuted on Netflix earlier this month and it picks up exactly where the first film left off. Two tales of royal romance? It’s a Christmas miracle indeed!

White Christmas

This is a Christmas movie classic that will please every guest on your holiday party list. White Christmas originally aired back in the 1950s, but the musical film, starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Vera Ellen is an eternal fave film of many. In this holiday singalong, Crosby and Kaye team up with Clooney and Ellen to spread a little Christmas cheer by saving a local inn from closing.

The Princess Switch

Vanessa Hudgens is a queen in our hearts thanks to her High School Musical days, but she gets to truly star as a member of a royal family in this Netflix original movie. The film is essentially a holiday version of The Parent Trap, but its cheesy romance and unexpected can't miss moments make it the perfect Christmas film. And for even more Netflix original films to add to your holiday watching list, check out this handy guide.

The Nutcracker

Want to dance with the Sugarplum Fairies without leaving your couch? Just press play on a movie version of The Nutcracker, which features the New York City Ballet. Kevin Kline serves as your narrator for the cinematic journey, which includes appearances from actors Jessica Lynn Cohen and Macaulay Culkin.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinter’s Tale

This latest chapter in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina isn’t a movie, but that doesn’t mean it’s lacking on holiday magic (sorry). As we continue to await the arrival of CAOS part 2, Netflix has gifted fans with this special holiday episode. Of course, not everything in this episode appears to be holly and jolly, as a previous trailer teased a special appearance from Santa... and Satan.

Beethoven's Christmas Adventures

Christmas is in trouble, and the only uh, animal that can save the day is Beethoven. Actors Tom Arnold, Kyle Massey, and Kim Rhodes, and John O'Hurley star in this tale, which has Beethoven attempting to rescue Santa's stolen bag of goodies from a group of joy-stealing thieves.

Curious George: A Very Monkey Christmas

All of your fave characters from Curious George reunite for this Christmas special. Ever wonder what goes into preparing a Christmas when our favorite fictitious monkey is in charge? This animated film will give you the adorable answer.

A Christmas Wedding Planner

Gossip Girl's Kelly Rutherford stars alongside Jocelyn Hudon and Stephen Huszar in a film of unexpected holiday romance. Joey Fatone of NSYNC also makes a special guest appearance, encouraging an unlikely couple to find love at Christmas.

Glamorous Emerald, Sapphire & Peach Countryside Wedding

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

In the Fall of 2016, I was offered a job working in Washington D.C. for the US House of Representatives, and I knew I couldn’t take on this adventure without Lexi by my side. I was incredibly nervous, but I knew I couldn’t miss this opportunity to spend the rest of my life with the most incredible girl on this earth.

So I came up with a plan. Lexi and I would fly to D.C., and our parents would surprise her there. With a stroke of luck, I was able to propose in a place that only a few in the world have had an opportunity to visit: The Speaker of The House Balcony at the Capitol Building. The balcony is one of the most iconic locations in the United States.

After our parents surprised her, we walked out onto the balcony, and I grabbed her hand. Pushing back tears, I said, “Lexi Kate, the next few years will be tough. I am moving across the United States to work at a job that I know will require long hours and late nights. But, Lexi, I know I can’t do it without you. This beautiful city will be our home, and I couldn’t ask for a better wife, teammate, and best friend to tackle this adventure with.”

Then, I got on one knee and asked the most beautiful, compassionate, hilarious, and loving lady ever created to be my wife. And she said YES! After the proposal, we flew back to Texas, and all of our friends and family were waiting to surprise us at Chick-Fil-A to have milkshakes in honor of our first date. It was the most perfect weekend of my entire life.

Buying Basics for Fall

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

When I think about the formula for the perfect fall outfit it usually consists of denim, a cami, a cozy cardigan and booties. All of these items pull serious weight in my closet. Every year I usually invest in a few new pieces to get me through the long, cool months ahead. The perks of living in Chicago – a big fall wardrobe!

I recently found a few new pieces at Lord & Taylor that have quickly become some of my favorite items to wear together and separately. One reason that I invest in pieces like this season after season is because they can create so many different outfits but also act as my daily uniform.

Trust me when I say YOU NEED THESE BOOTIES. I can’t believe they are only $109 because they look and feel like a million bucks. I never want to take them off and know they will go with just about everything this season (the perfect color to pair with both brown and black). I wanted a cardigan that wasn’t super heavy and this one fits the bill. It is a terry material and has taken me from cozy in bed to daycare drop off to lunch meetings to airplanes for the past week. It’s a good staple to have in your rotation. The number one thing I invest in each year is a good pair of denim. They are hands down my most worn item all year round and well worth the price. I love this pair of Paige denim because the ankle length is perfect for boots, flats and sneakers. Finally, a lace cami will always be a star in my closet. On date nights I pair it with a leather jacket and during the day it dresses up my favorite casual outfits. The floral print is a fun extension from my usually black/white basics.

Lord & Taylor is currently having their biggest sale of the season!! Up to 30% off women’s apparel and up to 40% off women’s shoes. Definitely the perfect time stock up on basics for fall! What is your fall uniform??

In collaboration with Lord & Taylor and Shopstyle.
